Sunday Drive is a unique pixel game made for those who appreciate cozy and nostalgic moments. It has a simple yet addictive gameplay where player controls the car and scores points for different tasks.
From the start, the goal was to bring 90s college gaming vibes to the web through the game’s style and structure. Pixel graphics perfectly capture the nostalgic feel of classic video games.
The game doesn’t use any graphics libraries like Three.js – I chose to skip off-the-shelf solutions and build the pipelines from scratch. For models, it uses the RC3 format, converted from GLTF, which only stores geometry data. In the case of cars, it also includes info about ‘bones’ and the attached models.
All cars can be damaged, it’s possible because If you take a closer look at the vehicles, the cars are made up of several parts.
The front and rear sections are separate to show damage based on the side of impact. The wheels are also independent, allowing them to spin during turns. For cars that haven’t collided and are simply driving on the road (excluding the player’s car), they’re merged into a single model and rendered in one pass.
The game offers casual yet highly addictive gameplay. Players earn points by performing various actions like knocking over trash cans, hitting traffic lights, and evading the police. The player has a garage with different cars at his disposal.
A soundtrack was created for the game, with separate audio tracks recorded for different scenes that seamlessly merge together to create a cohesive experience that completely immerses the player in the game world.
